Studying in English? No, you don't need to speak French :)

Studying in French? Depending on your situation, you need to prove that you can speak French.

Who needs to write a French proficiency test?

All students applying to study programmes that are taught in French.

Exceptions:

  • Students studying 100% in English
  • Students from a country where French is the only official language*
  • Students who have completed high school in French

*Countries where French is the only official language: Benin, Burkina Faso, Congo - Brazzaville, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Guinée - Conakry, Mali, Monaco, Niger, République Démocratique du Congo, Sénégal, Togo.

Which French tests are accepted?

The minimum level of French required is B2. Some programmes, however, require C1 level.

The DELF B2 and DALF C1 are acceptable.

The TCF TP (with the written section) and TEF are also acceptable, provided the level B2 or C1 is validated by the test result, and a minimum result of 14 /20 is achieved for the written section (expression écrite).

Contact your nearest Alliance Française to arrange to write a French proficiency test or to inquire about French lessons.

DAP applicants must write the DELF B2 or DALF C1, or the TCF TP (avec expression écrite). The TEF is not accepted for DAP.
